Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA)/National Capital Area will host its 3rd Annual SCRABBLE Squabble for Literacy on November 2, 2002 in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., July 22, 2002 - Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA)/National Capital Area announced today that it will host its 3rd Annual SCRABBLE Squabble for Literacy on November 2, 2002 at the Memorial Continental Hall at the Headquarters of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, D.C.

This fund raising gala held to raise awareness of adult illiteracy in the Washington area and to raise funds to help adults in the D.C.--metropolitan area improve their reading and writing skills. Also, this year during the event there will be a formal signing of the Declaration of Independence from Illiteracy. The LVA Declaration of Independence takes a stand against illiteracy to improve the lives of adults and of their children.

An estimated 37 percent of adults in Washington are functionally illiterate, robbing them of their most basic needs, opportunities, and pleasures," says LVA Executive Director Elin Ross. Because of low literacy skills, many area adults cannot read their mail or medicine labels, fill out a job application, or simply read to their children."

For more than 15 years, LVA tutors have helped hundreds of area adults improve their literacy skills with free and confidential one-on-one training. The event will be supported by numerous businesses and organizations, including the National Scrabble Association. Past contributors include Wilmer, Cutler, & Pickering, Harbour Club, Great American Restaurants, Icelandic Air, Ritz Carlton Pentagon City, Mortons of Chicago Steak House, and others.
