Give Your Readers a Positive Way to Respond to 9-11

In the days after 9-11, we were amazed at the extraordinary acts of bravey that ordinary people performed. The website www.9-11-2002.org encourages ordinary Americans to follow their example by choosing to use September 11, 2002, as a day to serve others as a volunteer.

New Website Helps Readers Answer the Call to Be Heroes
Alexandria, VA--August 27, 2002 (The Opposites of Terrorism Project)

Pat is a 43-year-old mother of two who works part time so that she can be at home when the bus drops off her kids. Her older brother is stationed at Fort Bragg, and while she worries about him being sent overseas again, she's more worried about the possibility of another terrorist attack in her own "backyard."

Because Pat and her family live within the blast radius of a potential second attack in the DC metro area. So she does her best not to think about it.

But it's hard not to think about terrorism, given the daily news. Pat, like many of us, wonders how--and even if--we can use the new reality of terrorism to push us beyond emergency plans and panic-stricken analyses toward a more clear-eyed view of what we, one person at a time, can do to make a better future.

Especially now--because the anniversary of 9-11 is looming.

Anniversaries of events like 9-11 leave people wondering what they can do to mark the event and yet transcend its trauma. A new website (9-11-2002.org) frames a way to deal with 9-11 by helping others. It suggests we honor those who served on 9-11 by serving others in need.

In the days after 9-11, we were amazed at the extraordinary acts of bravey that ordinary people performed. The website www.9-11-2002.org encourages ordinary Americans to follow their example by choosing to use September 11, 2002, as a day to serve others as a volunteer.

Helping others lets us answer the call to be the heroes we were meant to be--in daily re-commitment to a meaningful, values-based life. The first step: visiting www.9-11-2002.org and choosing to make 9-11 a day of service.
