Single Mother of 6 'accidentally' creates unique home based business that gets the whole family involved!
In 2001, Baton Rouge placed third on the list for best cities for entrepreneurs. We arent surprised to see that entrepreneurial spirit taking hold in Greenwell Springs as well. Creating a small business takes courage and ingenuity. It means the ability to mix dreams with practicality. And sometimes the best place to mix those ingredients is --in the kitchen. That's exactly what Greenwell Springs entrepreneur, Suzanne Roberts of acScent Stone, has done.
Roberts, the mother of six children and now proud grandmother of twin girls, says that acScent Stone actually began accidentally. It was the result of play on a day when she was making craft clay at home and experimenting with different colors and textures. Her son Michael, daughter Jessica, and little brother Henry were with her. Roberts had been experimenting with the textured clay for Michael to use to mold his 'own brand of art. Michael, her muse and inspiration, suggested her clay had the color and texture of rock rather than molding clay.
Playfully, she went along with his teasing observation. If that was what it looked like, then "a rock" it was. Roberts began making small smooth stones. Shortly after she thought of scenting them with fragrance oils. She was surprised to find that friends and family found them to be an attractive addition to potpourri or dried flower mixes and were asking for more.
Little brother Henry had another thought. Make bowls with the clay and scent them as well. Roberts did. The scented bowls and stones have become a big hit at local craft and gift stores as well as 8 other states in the US. When extra hands were needed, her children pitched in--designing, decorating, stenciling, and marketing.
By the time the family was ready to go into full scale marketing, everyone was involved investing their talents, inspiration and dedication. Her high standards and assurance of quality keeps her customers coming back. "Every bowl or stone has to measure up to my standards, "said Roberts," After all, it has my name on it." Roberts and her children have now turned acScent Stone into a unique home based business that involves the whole family.
Roberts has plans to grow and is offering opportunities for others to join in her business as associates in sales. Right now she has 12 Sales Reps. and 8 Independent Distributors across the country.
