Nationwide Boycott against Infinity Broadcasting
A nationwide broadcast against Infinity Broadcasting and their sponsors for their support of censorship in media.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nationwide boycott against Infinity Broadcasting, Inc.
NEW YORK, NY - Aug 30, 2002 - Last week Infinity Broadcasting was informed of a complaint made to the FCC by William Donohue of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights regarding a broadcast where the shock jock duo allegedly
broadcast a blow by blow account of a Virginia couple having sex in St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan. In actuality, there was no broadcast detailing what the couple was doing - in
fact the transcript provided to the FCC by Donohue shows little more than an argument with the New York Police Department and one of the stations guests.
The reaction from Infinity Broadcasting was to pull Gregg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia off the air from WNEW-FM in New York, and more than a dozen other markets that they were syndicated
in. In one stroke the number one show on the Infinity roster, with over ten million daily listeners, was silenced.
This represents censorship in media. Despite the fact that nothing obscene was broadcast, the show was pulled from the air as a result of pressure from a religious organization
that has shown nothing but intolerance towards anything in the media they perceive to be "'anti-Catholic."
We are an ad-hoc group of fans of the show, industry leaders, and people who are concerned about our right to make up our own
minds on what is moral and not, we are planning a nationwide boycott of Infinity Broadcasting, Inc. and their sponsors. We are also planning a rally to be held at WNEW-FM studio
at 888 Seventh Avenue, New York, New York on Friday, September 20th at 3PM.
