South Florida BP/Amoco Stations Receive More English and Spanish Guides
North Miami (September 9, 2002) -- The well-worn phrase, It aint over 'til its over" never had more meaning than when its applied to the South Florida hurricane season. Now is not the time to let down our guard," said Max Mayfield, director of the National Hurricane Center, pointing out the peak season" actually lasts from mid-August through the end of November.
Thats why students from Florida International University have begun replenishing South Floridas participating Amoco/BP stations with their annual free pocket-sized Get Ready 2002 hurricane-preparedness guides. The 72-page booklet, printed in English and Spanish, is underwritten by BP/Amoco and the International Hurricane Center, with input from the National Hurricane Center and both South Florida American Red Cross chapters. Its the ninth year FIUs Public Relations Student Society of America Chapter has produced and distributed the award-winning guides.
The million or so new residents relocating here since Andrew know little about preparedness," Mayfield observed. And many of those living here during Andrew only experienced fringe effects of the storm. Both groups need access to solid information about preparedness. And Get Ready 2002 is a handy how-to guide," he added.
Dr. Stephen Leatherman (aka Dr. Beach"), director of the International Hurricane Center, also urges citizens to check out the Get Ready 2002 on-line version at www.fiu.edu/~getready. Through their website, the students have made important hurricane-mitigation information available to all 44 million people living along U.S. coastal waters," Leatherman says.
PRSSA students hope to give away some 80,000 copies of Get Ready 2002 this storm season.
