FASHION MAGAZINE TARGETS AFRICAN-AMERICAN TEENS
Alexandria, VA--In August 2002, the first issue of ZURI magazine hit the newsstands. ZURI, a Swahili word for beautiful, is a teen fashion magazine that targets African-American women between the ages of 12 and 19. In addition to fashion, the magazine features topics related to beauty, health, entertainment, and other lifestyle issues. It is one of the first magazines to specifically target young African-American women, and the only fashion magazine of its kind.
Ethnic youth are trendsetters in fashion, and I wanted to create a vehicle to help guide young women to be fashionable and stylish, while maintaining a ladylike appearance," said Donna King, publisher and editor of ZURI. The magazine encourages self-acceptance and seeks to challenge the eager minds of its young adult readers. The overall goal is to inspire young women to dream big and to entertain them in the process.
A former patent attorney, Ms. King set her sights on providing young women with positive reflections of themselves. Young African-American women are one of the most underrepresented segments in society," she said. This magazine is a cultural resource for young women, and provides a welcomed alternative to mainstream magazines such as Seventeen, YM, and Cosmo Girl."
Published bimonthly, a one-year (6 issues) subscription to ZURI is $14.95 and is available direct from www.zurimag.com. Single copies are available on select newsstands nationwide or directly from the website. For more information, contact ZURI Magazine at (703) 339-0202.
