CBC AND ZIM TECHNOLOGIES DELIVER SMS NEWS UPDATES

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and ZIM Technologies International Inc. launches a new SMS service today, CBC Mobile News Updates. This pilot project allows subscribers to receive news updates on their mobile phones via SMS (Short Message Service) text messaging.

Subscribers can choose from a variety of categories such as: headline news, including Canadian, business, world and entertainment stories; sports, encompassing amateur sport and hockey updates; and regional news, offering subscribers the option to choose updates from any of the provinces and territories.

We are happy to now offer CBC users a new method of accessing our news. The Mobile News Updates Service gives our subscribers the flexibility to get our updates when they want it and how they want it via their cellphone," said Bob Kerr, Director, New Media Partnering.

The service is simple to use. Subscribers log on to the CBC Web site (cbc.ca/wireless) go to the ZIM link and complete the short registration form. Users personalize their registration by choosing the news categories and the times they want to receive the updates. The information is then delivered to their mobile phone as an SMS text message.

SMS text messaging is a convenient and cost effective way to get information when and where you want it. With the ability to personalize what information you receive, it is perfectly suited to extending the CBC News Online service," said Michael Cowpland, President and CEO of ZIM Technologies International, which developed and maintains the service. This news service is just one of the many ways that SMS is changing the way we receive and relate to information."
