The Art of Layout is Revived!

The art of sheet metal is not dead, but it hasn't been feeling well lately. A new book, Layout for Duct Fittings, by Leo A. Meyer, may revive what many thought was a dying art. Any sheet metal worker can use it to learn to lay out the patterns for duct fittings. A contractor with a skilled layout person can do more work in-house.
Layout skills used to be handed down from one worker to another when all fittings were laid out and fabricated in the sheet metal shop. Few sheet metal workers still know how to create fittings needed to make quality duct installations.
Layout for Duct Fittings teaches practical, easy to follow shop methods for laying out duct fittings. It assumes the technician knows the basics of sheet metal fabrication. It explains the principals of triangulation and parallel line layout needed to make patterns. Illustrated step-by-step methods show how to lay out:

     Rectangular transitions
     S offsets
     Rectangular duct elbows
     Square-to-rounds
     Round tapers
     Round tees
     Round elbows

Author Leo A. Meyer is a skilled layout man and teacher who devised some of the layout methods that have become standard in the industry. This book is based on years of experience and teaching.
Many in the industry thought that skills would die out because computerized duct layout and manufactured have taken over so much of the market. Because only a few skilled sheet metal craftsmen still know how to lay out a range of duct fittings, skills often don't get passed on to a new generation. But specialized fittings are still needed, and small sheet metal shops often can't afford computerized layout equipment.
Layout for Duct Fittings can be used as a handy reference or as a textbook to learn all the methods needed for duct layout. This book is in the series Indoor Environment Technician's Library(IET). It is available from Leo A. Meyer Associates, www.lamabooks.com ; lama@lamabooks.com; 888-452-6244; 20956 Corsair Blvd, Hayward, CA 94545.
