The new Pervasive Computing Technology Map from Kenchiku Consulting Business Intelligence's (Kenchiku Intelligence) Portal Service estimates the current market for pervasive computing at below $1 billion, in contrast to other market estimates for pervasive computing'some as high as $215 billion in 2003.

"The problem with market estimates ranging from $500 million to more than $200 billion is that different companies define pervasive computing differently," says Omura Saki, consultant at Kenchiku. The Pervasive Computing Technology Map frames pervasive computing as the trend toward mobile, networked, casually accessible computers. "People often confuse pervasive computing with anytime, anywhere Internet access, and some companies size the market on the basis of this definition. But the impact of pervasive computing will extend far beyond 24/7 connectivity to the World Wide Web," says Omura. "Pervasive computing is not just computers everywhere," continues Omura. "Rather, pervasive computing marks a move toward human-centered computing, in which computing tasks fade into the background. In pervasive-computing environments, individuals will be less aware of their everyday computing tasks, and computers will be more aware of human needs and wants."

Such a shift in human-computer relationships will not occur overnight. Most applications of pervasive computing particularly industrial, military, and telecommunication applications' will face important commercialization challenges in the next three to five years. Problems such as poor interoperability among electronic devices, the lack of precedents for human behavior in context-aware spaces, undetermined business models, the possibility that intelligent software agents will gossip and propagate misinformation, and the increasing complexity of networks are significant obstacles for pervasive-computing environments. Yet despite these problems, the breadth of industries that will change and benefit from pervasive computing implies widespread adoption. Pervasive computing means smart sensors in factories, radio-frequency identification tags in warehouses, smart clothing for health monitoring, context-aware homes, and swarms of mobile, autonomous computers in military applications.
