Sloganeer debuts politically provocative wearables.
GreedWear creates t-shirts that bring focus to an important socio-political issue and help redefine patriotism.
West Hollywood, California. - October 3, 2002 - Robert Blackmon is no Betsy Ross, but his recasting of the American flag with a blue field spangled in dollar signs and red stipes formed of barcode represents his view of current U.S. politics perfectly. Blackmon has started GreedWear, a t-shirt design and production studio, to bring this and other provocative ideas to the public's attention.
Greed is a primary issue in contemporary political and economic debates. Ongoing coprporate accounting scandals, President Bush's call for war on Iraq and the growing perception of the United States as handmaiden to global corporations are a few of the ways Blackmon sees greed working against the best interests of people in the U.S. and around the world.
"Clothing 21st-Century Patriots" is the guiding principle of GreedWear. One of Blackmon's goals is to have people reconsider the nature of patriotism. His t-shirt designs have been called anti-American and unpatriotic, but he believes that it is the willingness of too many people accept a jingoistic definition of patriotism that reduces the relevance of our democracy for the rest of the world.
Other GreedWear shirts bear the slogans, 'The Invisible Hand Strangles the Working Class', 'Capitalism, Democracy: they're NOT synonyms', 'One Nation Under Greed', and 'Regime Change? U.S.A. First!'.
GreedWear is located in West Hollywood, California. It's sales are conducted entirely via the internet at http://www.greedwear.com. The company began operations in August, 2002.
