THE TILOS SPIRIT OF FRIENDSIP PROGRAM
October 3, 2002
The Mayor of Tilos, Dr. Anastasios Aliferis, and the Hotel Owners Association of the island of Tilos in the Dodacanese Islands of Greece in cooperation with Olympic Airways inaugurated their first annual Spirit of Friendship Program with their invitation to Dr. Spiegel, the German Ambassador to Greece, for one hundred children who were victims of the recent devastating floods in Germany to join the 270 island residents as their guests for one week of cultural and recreational activities to alleviate the suffering caused by the recent disaster.
Upon hearing of this Spirit of Friendship project, Olympic Airways quickly and enthusiastically volunteered to provide complimentary round trip air transportation between Germany and Rhodes, Greece. The Tilos Hotel Association and Office of the Tilos Mayor arranged for complimentary hotel accommodations, cultural excursions and round trip Aegean transportation on the Tilos Sea Star, a high-speed catamaran hovercraft, which the German Ambassador said will be a great delight to the children.
Historical, ecological and recreational activities include a picnic tour of the eighteenth century monastery dedicated to St. Panteleimon, a visit to the historical museum, an ecological exploration of the island with its unique native flora and fauna, and entertainment created especially for this visit.
