NMI, The National Microelectronics Institute, is announcing Dynex Semiconductor and Sony Manufacturing as winners of the 2002 British Energy/NMI Energy Efficiency Awards. The presentation of the awards, sponsored by British Energy and the NMI, was made at the NMI annual dinner by Stephen Timms MP, Minister of State for E-Commerce & Competitiveness at the Department of Trade & Industry and Ewan McConnell, General Manager, Direct Supply, British Energy. Each company received a crystal trophy to mark their achievements.
Both companies have dramatically achieved their respective energy savings through the implementation of best practice combined with their own targetted approaches to energy savings,"
said Clive Dyson, NMI Chief Executive. The energy management teams within each facility have worked extremely hard to achieve these very creditable results, providing a very positive example for industries to follow in the UK and indeed worldwide."
To claim its accolade in the Semiconductor Manufacturing section of the awards, Lincoln based Dynex Semiconductor reduced its overall energy consumption throughout the whole of its manufacturing processes by 30% over a two year period. Over the previous year, the company has achieved savings of over 110,000 on energy costs.
Sony, for its CRT manufacturing facilities, reduced its energy consumption by 37% over the period, with savings of around 600,000 on its energy bills, enabling the company to claim the accolade in the CRT Manufacturing section of the awards.
The British Energy/NMI Energy Efficiency Awards are awarded to companies making major savings in energy consumption within the two UK industry sectors of semiconductor and CRT manufacturing. Following a five year period of collaboration with the industry on energy efficiency, the NMI successfully negotiated Climate Change Agreements with DEFRA, the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, resulting in taxation benefits for those companies committing to energy efficiency improvements over a ten year period and achieving pre-set targets.
The National Microelectronics Institute was set up specifically to support the microelectronics industry and assists its continued growth, covering all aspects of design, integrated circuit manufacture, embedded software and product introduction. The organisation, which was founded in 1996 as a non profit-making organisation, is owned by its members who comprise semiconductor manufacturers, design houses, suppliers to the industry, and regional development agencies.
