Jazz Singer/I Cry By Night Exemplar 2004
The recordings contained on this release prove beyond a doubt that Kay Starr is one of the all-time great jazz singers. JAZZ SINGER features Kay backed by the very hip and sophisticated arrangements of Van Alexander, featuring big band with organ. The program draws heavily from bluesy material popularized by the Count Basie orchestra, perhaps the biggest influence on Starrs early development. Hear why Billie Holiday declared that Starr is ...the only white woman who can really sing the blues."
I CRY BY NIGHT is a devastatingly effective set of torch songs featuring Starr backed by small ensemble. Tenor giant Ben Webster is the featured accompanist on several tracks, including a heart wrenching rendition of Lover Man." The coalescence of artist, repertoire, arrangement, and accompaniment rivals the great Sinatra suicide albums like ONLY THE LONELY and WHERE ARE YOU?
Movin/Movin On Broadway Exemplar 2005
MOVIN and MOVIN'ON BROADWAY are marvelous examples of the golden era of the concept album. After four years at another label, Starr returned to Capitol Records in 1959 to more fully exploit the LP format. Her first album project was MOVIN, a collection of songs linked by the common theme of travel. Produced by Dave Cavanaugh with arrangements by Van Alexander, MOVIN amply demonstrates Starrs vocal prowess and adaptability. Most of the songs are from the swing era and harken back to the days when Starr was the songbird for the Charlie Barnet orchestra. Of the many highlights, Starrs achingly beautiful version of I Cover The Waterfront" and her unsurpassed blues belting of Goin To Chicago Blues" are not to be missed.
MOVIN' ON BROADWAY is a collection of music from the theater, featuring songs from Cole Porters Can-Can, Lerner and Lowes My Fair Lady, Styne, Comden and Greens Bells Are Ringing, and gems from other musical theater hits of the fifties. As on MOVIN, the sophisticated arrangements of Van Alexander add immeasurably to the proceedings. Several numbers flirt with Latin rhythms like the cha-cha, with an emphasis placed on percussion. This album has never before appeared on CD anywhere, and the response from aficionados of jazz singing has been overwhelming!
