Phoenix Business Donated Proceed to Breast Cancer Research

Breast Cancer Survivor Donates proceeds of her company to Breast Cancer research.

PHOENIX BUSINESS DONATES PROCEEDS TO CANCER RESEARCH

Beaux Tie Designs of Phoenix recently launched its new website and will be donating 15% of the total amount of every purchase to breast cancer research and support organizations. Contrary to standard corporate practice, the donation will be made in the name of the purchaser or in memory of another, effectively passing the acknowledgement and benefit of the donation on to the purchaser.
The first charity to be selected is the Arizona Institute for Breast Health (AIBH). The mission of this non-profit organization is to educate and heal women with breast cancer without delay because time is of the essence.
Mary Purkiss, co-founder of Beaux Tie Designs, found this out by personal experience. Blaming her busy work schedule and the fact that there was no history of breast cancer in her family, she had never had a mammogram. Only when she started to have some strange symptoms, did she see her doctor. Within 17 days she had a mastectomy.
This life changing experience affected her whole family. She and husband Ed saw the cancer as a signal to slow down and find balance in their life with their three children.
A home-based business sounded good, and with Eds professional experience with computers and the Internet, they decided to start a virtual company.
Mary had always been interested in art and design, and as a hobby had been making custom-designed and crafted pins for her friends and family. These pins were always well received so they decided to open their virtual store with Marys hand crafted jewelry. They did a test in November 2001 and by Christmas had sold $700 in products. They saw this as a good sign and spent much of this year developing product and a new website: www.beauxties.com.
While there are many jewelry products offered, Marys special pins are her pink ribbon support cancer pins, beautifully made in gold or silver in a variety of designs. The back of each pin is engraved Support Breast Cancer Research". Prices range from $5 to $379.
Their goal is to donate $150,000 each year.
We wanted to give back," Mary said. This disease has made a major impact on our lives and we want to get the message out that early detection is extremely important."
The website also offers educational information and will eventually have a chat room for sufferers and survivors of breast cancer. According to the National Breast Cancer Coalition, a woman dies of breast cancer every eleven minutes, or 130 women a day. Men are also at risk.
