MICHAEL WISSOT AIMS TO RETURN LOCAL CONTROL ON COASTAL ISSUES
BACK TO MALIBU BY REPEALING DAMAGING CALIFORNIA STATE LAW
Reversal of AB 988 will unite Malibu residents across party lines
WOODLAND HILLS (PRWEB) October 11, 2002 - Michael Wissot, the Republican 41st Assembly District nominee and former Ventura County Air Pollution Control District employee, announced that his first legislative priority in Sacramento next year will be repealing AB 988, a bill that once stripped Malibu from devising its own LCP/LUP and reallocated the authority to the California Coastal Commission.
"I am proud to support this local initiative upon my immediate arrival in Sacramento next year," Wissot said. "This issue exemplifies the importance of maintaining local control, as well as the damages incurred from an overly intrusive government body."
Despite countless complaints from Malibu residents, the Coastal Commission has pursued a rigid agenda that deprives the city of Malibu from dictating its optimal balance of conservationism and responsible growth. Among these local concerns are the ESHA designation limiting the rights of property owners, removing little league baseball fields at Bluffs Park, and state-mandated ordinances on beach access.
"In every instance, the Coastal Commission has sent a flagrantly insulting signal that it can better discern on local issues than the city of Malibu," Wissot said. "This sort of micromanagement creates more bureaucracy that impedes local policies from passing expeditiously. It's time for someone in the state legislature to stand up for Malibu, and that's precisely what I intend to do."
The Wissot For Assembly campaign has rallied tremendous support from Malibu residents via local events like the Chili Cook-off, speaking to services clubs and schools, and walking door-to-door along the coastline. Michael Wissot has personally walked over 14,000 households in District 41 through September.
"From all the wonderful experiences I've had walking our neighborhoods, I've discovered this particular issue to be well received across party lines," Wissot said. "People appreciate the efforts of a leader who not only comes to their house to hear their concerns, but also one who is willing to represent their voices in Sacramento. I will fight for my constituents in bolder and brighter ways than my predecessors."
