Contrary to the typical anti-virus scanner, Abtrusion Protector does not attempt to recognize viruses or other malicious software. Instead, Abtrusion Protector keeps track of software that has been safely installed on the computer it protects. No other software is allowed to run. This provides a very efficient protection against most types of viruses and hacker attacks.
Typical anti-virus software is good at recognizing and eliminating viruses that have been around for a while. However, as seen with the BugBear worm recently, brand new hacker tools or viruses are usually not recognized by anti-virus scanners. Abtrusion Protector stops new viruses just as well as old ones and is not dependent on frequent virus definition updates.
Abtrusion Protector also supports digital signatures, and can be set-up to automatically allow signed software from trusted software vendors. This feature significantly reduces administrative overhead for the product. Furthermore, when new software is installed on a computer, Abtrusion Protector can be set-up to automatically record the new files and modify software permissions accordingly.
In a corporate network, Abtrusion Protector can be managed at a central site. Management of software permissions can also be distributed throughout the organization. Although Abtrusion Protector is primarily intended for corporate use, it is easy to set-up and manage for the home user as well. Abtrusion Protector is free for personal, non-commercial use (please see the current license terms for details).
Abtrusion Protector works on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. It operates alongside traditional security products, such as personal firewalls and anti-virus software. The product can be downloaded from the company web site, http://www.abtrusion.com/Downloads
