DistinctlyBritish.com - one-stop shopping for the Best of British with the click of a mouse

Where else but DistinctlyBritish.com could one buy a bespoke wooden tree-house; an organic Wensleydale wool cushion; an architectural model book-end and scrumptious Cheddar from a former Cheesemaker of the Year?

DistinctlyBritish.com is an on-line department store stocking a large selection of high quality, distinctive goods, often unique for the house and garden, kitchen, larder, wardrobe and gifts made by artisans and small producers in towns and villages all over the British Isles.

DistinctlyBritish.com takes the Buy British campaign, the "use it or lose it" attitude about local services and the recognition that small producers are the backbone of Britain one step further. Offering buyers a convenient method of purchasing quality goods that span all reasons for shopping - need, desire, impulse and instant gratification, all these are deliciously repeated when the goods arrive a few days later through the mail.

DistinctlyBritish.com was founded by Christopher Roundell who is distinctly British with ancestry on his mother's side reaching to 11th century Queen (later Saint) Margaret of Scotland, wife of Malcolm who became King when MacBeth was forced from the throne. On his father's side he traces the family to 15th century Yorkshire landed gentry named quite possibly after the Round Hill on their land near Knaresborough. He is one of the last living relatives of 16th century poet John Donne.

A passionate fly fisher, cook, shopper and traveller, he combined all these interests to write The Consumer Association's Which? Guide to Country Shopping in 1995 and meeting a myriad of small producers and artisans during his research inspired a desire to support the businesses that in his words were "distinctly British". His disappointment travelling around Britain and seeing the same large chain stores that homogenised the High Streets of most towns and cities spurred the establishment of Britain's only shopping website, www.DistinctlyBritish.com, dedicated to British-made goods.

Christopher Roundell believes DistinctlyBritish.com is timely given Britain's recent siege through foot and mouth disease; people's fear of frankenfood and Mad Cow Disease; the Countryside Alliance March drawing attention to rural matters; the European Economic Community attempting to abolish traditional practices in food especially for the sake of uniformity and the perception that faceless supermarket chains and global mega-businesses with no connection to the local economy are dominating the world.

Christopher Roundell spends a significant amount of time visiting markets, agricultural shows, and trade fairs all over Britain to find the best producers to join an expanding range of suppliers on www.DistinctlyBritish.com.
