Cambridge Positioning Systems to Enable High Accuracy E-OTD Location Technology on Texas Instruments' GPRS Chipsets for Mobile Handsets
Cambridge Positioning Systems Ltd (CPS) today announced it will integrate its Enhanced Observed Time Difference (E-OTD) high accuracy location technology into a range of TI GPRS chipsets for mobile handsets and wireless PDAs.
LONDON - October 14 2002 - Cambridge Positioning Systems Ltd (CPS) today announced it will integrate its Enhanced Observed Time Difference (E-OTD) high accuracy location technology into a range of TI GPRS chipsets for mobile handsets and wireless PDAs.
Once the integration process is complete, TI will be able to offer a range of products from a complete GSM terminal solution to an E-OTD ready chipset, including platform reference design, partial platform and a baseband chipset. The complete solution offered by TI will give its customers rapid access to market for E-OTD-enabled terminals.
The agreement with TI comes in response to growing demand from GSM device manufacturers seeking to launch E-OTD enabled handsets on the US market, in line with the FCC E-911 requirements for emergency call location. By the end of this year, all new GSM devices must be E-OTD enabled to meet the mandate.
"TI is pleased to be working with CPS to provide location functionality technology for the US market, providing important safety and security benefits to mobile handset users," said Tom Pollard, TI worldwide Chipset Marketing Director. "The integration of E-OTD technology on our TCS chipsets and reference designs will accelerate time-to-market for our customers, and is an example of our strategy to provide complete chipset solutions to the market."
CPS Chief Executive Officer Chris Wade said: "The fact that the world's largest GSM chipset manufacturer will begin embedding our technology into its products is a hugely significant milestone. It shows that E-OTD is now gathering significant momentum in its key markets - devices, chipsets and networking - and this can only be boosted further by the commitment of TI."
Integration and evaluation - expected to take three months - will take place at CPS' integration facility in Cambridge, UK in conjunction with TI and its newly acquired software group TI Berlin, formerly Condat.
E-OTD is regarded as a highly competitive solution for handset and chipset vendors as it requires a simple, low cost software integration. In turn, this enables rapid rollout of the technology into the market.

About Cambridge Positioning Systems
Cambridge Positioning Systems Limited (CPS) develops and licenses its Cursorä E-OTD (Enhanced Observed Time Difference) system to handset manufacturers and network equipment vendors. The company is working with, or has licensed its technology to Ericsson, Nortel Networks, Siemens and Lucent Technologies.
Cursorä delivers high accuracy mobile location technology for GSM networks, with even greater accuracy predicted on 3G networks. CPS has conducted successful trials of the Cursorä system in the UK, North America, Asia Pacific and Europe.
In the US, the Federal Communications Commission has mandated that all calls from mobile phones to emergency services be accompanied by highly accurate information about the location of a caller. This ruling known as E-911 will provide significant opportunities for CPS' highly accurate location technology as E-OTD emerges as the preferred choice to fulfil the FCC's regulation.
