Launched on 3 June, 2002, GLOBOsapiens ("GLOBO" for short) provides surfers with fast access to a unique travel resource. An integrated atlas of country statistics, maps and literature is the foundation, members supply the rest. Signing up is free and then it's official - you've made the leap from homosapien to globosapien. Now you've got your own personal travel page on the web's most exciting travel site!
An extensive geodatabase of almost 3 million destinations is your gateway to the planet. Write and publish travel reports and fill them with photos from your adventures. Open your own photo gallery. Even send e-postcards to your friends using your own pictures - guaranteed to make them jealous! If you're planning a trip you can search reports from travellers to find the best accommodation, coolest clubs and hottest restaurants. Discover the best places to shop and all the top sights, not to mention tips on places to avoid. All just a few mouse clicks away. And all from a community of real travellers, not some out of date guidebook.
A rapidly evolving member's forum is the latest addition, allowing travellers to seek advice and exchange information anywhere from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. Find out how to get your visa for Bhutan, if anyone's interested in joining you for a cycling tour of Europe, what camera gear to take, or where's the best pasta place in Florence.
GLOBOsapiens is the inspiration of Andy Pucko, an Interactive Media graduate from the University of Applied Sciences in Stuttgart, Germany. "I was in Whistler (Canada) and I met a guy from New Zealand who'd been travelling around the world," says Andy. "He had some amazing stories. Everyone loved them. I thought there must be so many people like him out there and even more who want to hear about their adventures." And so the idea was born.
More than 500 members have joined since going live, loading 1300 pictures and over 360 travel reports from 80 countries. Within two months the site was recognised by coolsiteoftheday (July 29) and hasn't looked back. "It's a perfect platform for people to learn about the world and share their experiences," explains Andy. "Our world is smaller today, more accessible. People travel more and visit places farther away. We're so much more global than we once were. We're globosapiens."
