Indiana and Seattle, Washington. We are entering the age of personalized medicine in which prescription drugs will be prescribed based on a person's DNA. Northern Indiana Health Centers (NIHC), the preeminent Indiana provider of medical services, and Genelex Corporation of Seattle, Washington, a world leading forensic, paternity and genetic testing laboratory, have joined to provide the latest in personalized DNA testing services to the state of Indiana
Among the tests being provided by the two firms are direct-to-the-public pharmacogenetic tests that are among the first of these tests to become available. The adoption of these tests is likely to become widespread as more than half the population vary from the norm and the test results could impact how one-third of the most important and widely prescribed drugs are used. "When doctors learn about these tests and start using them they will cut down on the number of adverse drug reactions. ADRs are the fourth biggest killer in the US taking more than 100,000 lives every year," said Howard Coleman, CEO of Genelex.
Genelex, a Redmond, WA firm founded in 1987, is one of a few labs worldwide with dual paternity and forensic accreditation. Last year, it became the first firm in the world to offer prescription drug reaction testing to the public to help reduce the incidence of adverse reactions to medicines. Soon, they will be bringing nutritional genetic testing to the market that will enable people to personalize their diets based on their genetic makeup to keep the body working at an optimum level.
NIHC Director Pam Deitch said This is a synergistic partnership. Both of our companies have extensive histories providing sensitive, confidential testing services direct to the public. Genelex has completed more than 100,000 individual DNA tests. They use the newest and best technology and provide the most accurate and reliable DNA test results in the industry typically 10,000 times more specific than the industry standard."
NIHC has a network of collection centers and personnel throughout the state of Indiana.
"We are pleased and excited that NIHC chose us as their provider of genetic testing services. Together we're ready for the Tsunami of genetic testing that will occur as the era of personalized medicine comes of age," stated Coleman.
