PINPOINT INCORPORATED AWARDED PATENT FOR PASSIVE / IMPLICIT PROFILING BY THE UNITED STATES PATENT AND TRADEMARK OFFICE

FORT WORTH, Texas, Oct. 17, 2002 -- Pinpoint Incorporated was awarded its eleventh US patent in the areas known as implicit or passive personalization, user profiling and customized content delivery. Patent No. 6,460,036, issued Oct. 1 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, covers a system by which personalized recommendations are made to a user based on their previous interaction with an electronic content provider.

Using Pinpoint technology, an interest-profile is created for each user based on their personal history of accessed content. Each user’s interest-profile is compared to the profiles of available content and a customized selection of content items is generated which is likely to be of interest to an individual user. The technology has broad applications in targeted content delivery for personalized electronic news, advertising, product recommendations, television programming and other E-commerce applications.

Additionally, the results of an online search can be customized and ordered based on a predicted level of interest. The technology protected by the Pinpoint patents lies at the heart of the burgeoning field of customer relationship management (CRM) now estimated to be a 43 billion dollar industry.

In a survey sponsored by the Personalization Consortium in 2001, it was determined that more than half (56 percent) of the respondents said they are more likely to purchase from a website that allows personalization.

"Online marketing has now entered a stage where personalization is the rule, not the exception," said Don Peppers of Peppers and Rogers Group, co-chair of the Personalization Consortium. "Savvy marketers will need to provide consumers the convenience of customization, show consumers its benefits, and earn the consumers' trust by carefully guarding all their personalized data."
