FORT WORTH, Texas, Oct. 17, 2002 -- Pinpoint Incorporated was awarded its eleventh US patent in the areas known as implicit or passive personalization, user profiling and customized content delivery. Patent No. 6,460,036, issued Oct. 1 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, covers a system by which personalized recommendations are made to a user based on their previous interaction with an electronic content provider.
Using Pinpoint technology, an interest-profile is created for each user based on their personal history of accessed content. Each userÂs interest-profile is compared to the profiles of available content and a customized selection of content items is generated which is likely to be of interest to an individual user. The technology has broad applications in targeted content delivery for personalized electronic news, advertising, product recommendations, television programming and other E-commerce applications.
Additionally, the results of an online search can be customized and ordered based on a predicted level of interest. The technology protected by the Pinpoint patents lies at the heart of the burgeoning field of customer relationship management (CRM) now estimated to be a 43 billion dollar industry.
Daniel Henderson, President and founder of Pinpoint Incorporated said,
" We live in a world with 600 television channels and billions of web pages. With the overwhelming quantity of data that can be accessed electronically, finding the right information is like finding a needle in a haystack. PinpointÂs passive profiling and powerful analysis tools deliver relevant information targeted to the needs of the end user. We are committed to provide people with a richer, more personalized online experience and a more efficient, trusted market place for E-commerce. "
Frederick Herz and a group of world-renowned professors from the University of Pennsylvania developed the Pinpoint technology. The technology includes more than 40 issued and pending patents worldwide, including US Patent numbers 5,758,257; 5,754,939; 5,835,087; and 5,754,938.
PinpointÂs development effort predates hundreds of other patents and software solutions in the field of personalization and content delivery. Pinpoint patents are cited as prior art by many companies, including: AltaVista, Amazon.com, America Online Inc., Ask Jeeves, AT&T, Bell Atlantic, British Telecom, Canon, CBS Corporation, Cisco, Digital Equipment, Ericsson, Expanse Networks, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, International Business Machines, Intel Corporation, Lucent, Matsushita Electric, Miramar Corporation, MCI WorldCom, Micron, Microsoft Corporation, Mitsubishi, Motorola, NCR, NEC, Netscape Communications, Nokia, Nortel, Northern Light, NTT, Openwave Systems, Oracle, Phillips, Qwest, Raytheon, Sabre, Sharp, Siebel Systems, Siemens, Sony, SRI International, Star Sight, Sun Microsystems, Telcordia, Toshiba, Unisys, The University of Kansas, The University of Minnesota, Verizon, Walker Digital, Walt Disney Corporation, WebTV networks, Xerox, and Yahoo.
In a survey sponsored by the Personalization Consortium in 2001, it was determined that more than half (56 percent) of the respondents said they are more likely to purchase from a website that allows personalization.
"Online marketing has now entered a stage where personalization is the rule, not the exception," said Don Peppers of Peppers and Rogers Group, co-chair of the Personalization Consortium. "Savvy marketers will need to provide consumers the convenience of customization, show consumers its benefits, and earn the consumers' trust by carefully guarding all their personalized data."
