Themis Computer Announces UltraSPARC III based Rugged Enterprise Servers

Themis New 5RU dual-processor servers provide exceptional computing speed, graphics and I/O capabilities for demanding applications in harsh environments.

FREMONT, California -- October 22, 2002 - Themis Computer announced its new RES-302s servers that provide users with exceptional computing speed, graphics and I/O capabilities, for demanding applications in extreme shock and vibration environments. Themis new UltraSPARC® III-based dual-processor servers combine the robust design of Themis Rugged Enterprise Server (RES) family with the power of Sun® Blade workstations.

Based on the Sun Blade 2000, the industrys first 1+ GHz 64-bit workstation, Themis RES-302s incorporates single or dual 64-bit 900 - 1050 MHz UltraSPARC III Cu Superscalar processors. The RES-302s achieves exceptional system level performance through the use of a crossbar-switch system interconnect, that delivers high bandwidth, up to 4 GBps, for ultra-high-speed processors and graphic subsystems.

The RES-302s is a flexible and powerful next-generation server offering users outstanding platform performance, dependability, and versatility. The RES-302s 5RU (Rack Units) design provides high performance and reliability for size-constrained environments. The RES-302s provides ample headroom for integration with current and future requirements -- it is easily expandable through the addition of commercially available, off-the-shelf networking cards, I/O, peripherals and other value-added options. With up to two 72 GB Fibre Channel - Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) internal disk drives and 8 GB of main memory, the RES-302s delivers exceptional system performance and configuration flexibility.

USB and IEEE 1394 (Firewire) interfaces support connectivity to Sun and leading edge third-party peripherals. The RES-302s also features high-end 3-D graphics, dual-monitor capabilities, and support for Sun's storage systems.

"I am pleased to announce our new generation of UltraSPARC servers that are engineered to provide outstanding performance and exceptional reliability," said William Kehret, president of Themis Computer. "Combining the Sun Blade 2000 architecture with our ruggedized technologies enables us to deliver industry leading systems and support for more than 12,000 industry applications."

The RES-302s server reflects Themis Computer's extensive experience designing rugged, high performance aerospace and military systems. To ensure reliable operation in extended operating environments, the RES-302s is designed to withstand shock loads of 20G @ 20 msec and operate in ambient temperatures to 50°C.

RES-302s Features

• 19" Rack-optimized Sun Blade 2000 design for unique user requirements.
• 900 - 1050 MHz UltraSPARC III high performance processors come with 8MB of L2 cache to support applications that require high computational speed and large cache.
• Up to 8GB main memory capacity, memory is installed in banks of four DIMMs (256MB, 512MB or 1GB SIMM modules) to take advantage of the architecture's 576-bit-wide memory path.
• Up to two (2) hard disk drives and CD-RW/DVD configurations provide flexibility for current and future compute requirements.
• 4mm DAT tape backup drive (optional).
• One (1) Fibre Channel - Arbitrated Loop port for mass storage.
• Two (2) 64-bit UPA graphics slots have dedicated ports to the high-speed fireplane system bus, providing maximum bandwidth; crucial for real-time 3D image rendering.
• Four (4) USB and two (2) IEEE 1394 (Firewire) interfaces for selected hot-plug external devices provide connectivity to Sun and third-party peripherals.
• Four (4) PCI slots for industry standard controllers, including one (1) 64-bit, 66 MHz slot and three (3) 64-bit, 33 MHz slots.
• Two (2) Ultrawide SCSI ports (one internal, one external).
• One (1) RJ45 Fast Ethernet (10/100Base-T) port.
• Four (4) 16-bit stereo-audio channels, including one line-in, one line-out, one microphone, and one speaker channel.
• Robust Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 Operating Environment for superior scalability and reliability.

The RES-302s runs the Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 Operating Environment. The RES-302s can also run 64-bit applications unmodified from the Solaris 7 Operating Environment, as well as 32-bit applications from previous versions of the Solaris Operating Environment, making these systems compatible with previous systems and software.
