Themis Computer Announces Next Generation
650 MHz USPIIe VME Computer Boards
Suns new UltraSPARC IIi CPU provides the reliability, scalability and highest performance of the industry-leading SPARC architecture for Themis new USPIIe-USB Single-Board Computers
FREMONT, California --October 22, 2002 -- Themis Computer has announced a new family of USPIIe-USB VMEbus single-board computers. The USPIIe-USB provides users with 500 MHz, 600 MHz, and 650 MHz UltraSPARC® RISC processing performance options, and Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 compatibility. These high-speed VME 64-bit architecture boards offer users configuration options designed to provide maximum I/O flexibility and performance.
The USPIIe-USB is a high-performance VMEbus computer board based on Sun® Microsystems most advanced 64-bit embedded SPARC superscalar processors. It demonstrates Themis commitment to provide embedded computing markets with the industrys widest breadth of high performance UltraSPARC-based VME single board computers.
Designed for configuration flexibility and high performance, the USPIIe-USB combines the latest 650 MHz UltraSPARC-IIi processors with a local PCI bus (PMC) peripheral controller slot and a high performance bridge. The USPIIe-USB is available in one-slot, two-slot and three-slot configurations. Each of the USPIIe-USB models includes a high performance VME64 interface, a dual Ultra3 80MB/sec SCSI port, up to two 10/100Base-T Ethernet port, and up to six RS-232 serial ports. Memory is expandable up to 4 Gbytes using memory mezzanine cards.
The cost-effective USPIIe-USB/1 single-slot configuration delivers low power dissipation and high flexibility for embedded computing applications. This USPIIe-USB baseboard configuration provides a single 64-bit PMC slot for local I/O or graphics expansion. Further I/O expansion is available via a 64-bit PCI riser to the second and third VME slots.
The USPIIe-USB/2P2 two-slot configuration offers significant I/O expansion options, including two additional PMC slots. This expanded I/O configuration provides AC97 audio, a second 10/100Base-T Ethernet port, two multiprotocol serial ports and a software readable front panel rotary switch. These features make it an ideal embedded processor for data and telecommunications applications.
The USPIIe-USB/2P3 is a doublewide configuration providing users three additional PMC slots without the other I/O port expansion features of the USPIIe-USB/2P2 configuration. All versions may be configured with Themis high performance TGA3D graphics co-processor. The TGA3D uses one additional VMEbus slot and provides one additional PMC slot.
Significant features of the USPIIe-USB include:
• 6U VME64 engine with 650 MHz UltraSPARC-IIi or 500 MHz UltraSPARC-IIe processor technology
• Single-VME slot, two-VME slot, and three-VME slot configurations
• High performance Tundra 64x Tundra VME64 interface
• 64 Mbytes to 4 Gbytes SDRAM Memory
• 512 KB L2 cache memory for 600/650MHz processor (256 KB for 500 MHz processor)
• FLASH Memory: 4 Mbytes for system, 8 Mbytes for user
• Up to four PMC extension slots: one (1) on baseboard, up to three (3) additional PMC slots on optional I/O expansion boards
• Up to two (2) 10/100Base-T Ethernet ports, one (1) on baseboard, one (1) on optional USPIIe-USB/2P2
• Two (2) 80 MB/sec SCSI Ultra3 LVD ports
• USB, Sun or IBM PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports
• Less than 20 Watts power consumption in single-VME slot configuration
• Up to six (6) serial ports: four RS232 Serial ports on baseboard, two (2) additional serial ports on optional I/O USPIIe-USB/2P2 expansion board
• Audio port on optional USPIIe-USB/2P2 -- sample rate 48KHz, 20 bits
• Front-panel software accessible hex" rotary switch on I/O expansion on optional USPIIe-USB/2P2
• Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 Operating Environment
The USPIIe-USB supports Solaris, the industry's leading Unix® Operating System. Solaris 9, Suns latest release, is today's preferred software development platform, with advanced multi-threading performance advantages, real-time characteristics, and a wide choice of off-the-shelf third party software. For demanding real-time applications, the USPIIe-USB also supports the latest operating system and development environment products.
"Our USPIIe-USB family of single board computers provides the high performance, reliability and scalability required by todays increasingly demanding COTS applications," stated William E. Kehret, president of Themis Computer. "Since our founding, weve focused on developing the highest performance and highest quality single-board computers and systems commercially available. Today Themis Computer offers rugged UltraSPARC-based VMEbus and Compact PCI single board computers for the most demanding voice and data applications," Mr. Kehret added.
High-Performance, 64-bit UltraSPARC IIe Processors for Embedded Systems
To meet the ever-increasing needs of embedded computing systems, Sun Microsystems developed the UltraSPARC IIe microprocessor. The UltraSPARC-IIembedded family includes the 500 MHz UltraSPARC IIe and the 650 MHz UltraSPARC IIi processors. The UltraSPARC IIe processor was designed with a high level of integration, to reduce power consumption, chip count and to reduce the overall system cost for high performance 64-bit computers. The UltraSPARC IIi 650 MHz microprocessor used in Themis USPIIe-USB boards is the fastest offering of the industrys first highly integrated 64-bit processor. This new CPU provides users greater performance along with the reliability, availability and scalability of the industry-leading SPARC architecture.
The UltraSPARC IIe and UltraSPARC IIi processors are a complete implementation of the SPARC V9 architecture used in Suns servers and workstations. Consequently, these processors are binary compatible with Suns whole UltraSPARC processor line. The 64-bit UltraSPARC IIe processor features integrated functions designed to lower overall system cost, shorten time-to-market and increase overall system performance. Users can seamlessly integrate Themis UltraSPARC IIe-based USPIIe and USPIIe-USB boards into demanding datacom, Internet, telecom and network environments, significantly reducing development time and costs.
