Have you ever wondered why some people move fluidly through their career paths while others seem to stumble, plateau, or derail entirely? Or, why some people get ahead despite the fact theyre not as technically capable as others? Dr. Lois Frankel, author of Overcoming Your Strengths: How to Avoid the 8 Reasons Why Successful People Fail, and one of the pioneers of business coaching, knows the answers to these questions and will share them on November 14th at the International Coach Federation, Orange County Conference.

Ive spent the past 10 years working one-on-one with professionals, managers, and executives, helping them to understand that career success is not contingent on working hard and being smart," says Frankel. This is especially true after weve already proven ourselves. At this point weve achieved the baseline and moving forward depends on skills related to emotional intelligence." Using examples from politics, entertainment, and business, Lois will provide conference participants with practical suggestions for defining the ways in which smart men and women fail, a simple model for working through resistance to change, and coaching tips that have proven effective in getting people back on track. Shell also give you a sneak preview of her upcoming book, Quit Bein a Girl: 101 Ways Women Sabotage Their Careers (Warner, 2003).

When asked for an example of why successful people fail, Frankel offered, The number one reason why people prematurely derail is because they overlook the importance of building relationships. Highly successful people combine technical capability with a strong 'likeability quotient." And how do you develop this? Its as easy as taking the time to drop by a co-workers office and ask how her daughter is doing with her first year of college or asking a direct report what he did over the week-end," claims Frankel. You cant look at it as wasting time, you have to view it as an investment in your future -- both you and the company win when you take the time to build collegial relationships."

As for the question of whether men and women make the same mistakes at work, Frankel gives an emphatic no. Women are socialized differently than men -- and these socialized behaviors often arent valued in business," Frankel points out. Things like speaking softly, understating a message, or not wanting to be too assertive are all problems unique to women more so than to men. These are all things Ill be talking about at the International Coach Federation Conference."
