EADS TELECOM takes role in ensuring the safety of all APEC Mexico 2002 participants with TETRAPOL technology

EADS TELECOM has provided the secure radio communication infrastructure based on TETRAPOL technology to the main security bodies and to the organising committee in all APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) Mexico 2002 events to help ensure the safety of participants.

London October 29th 2002 - EADS TELECOM has provided the secure radio communication infrastructure based on TETRAPOL technology to the main security bodies and to the organising committee in all APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) Mexico 2002 events to help ensure the safety of participants.

The APEC Mexico 2002 Summits inaugurated by Mexican President Vincente Fox, gathers together heads of governments and key official institutions. Relevant to such a high level summit is the communication equipment that will provide support to several security groups. These groups send and share sensitive information in a secure mode to ensure the integrity of all the participants during the events.

Security has always been a major issue in the APEC region, but in the wake of September 11th and the war on terrorism, it has come even more to the fore.

These summits, involving high-ranking representatives, rely upon state-of-the-art secured digital radio communications. End-to-end encryption ensures the safe transmission of data, voice or images, guaranteeing absolute confidentiality.

TETRAPOL technology is the only large-scale deployed radio communication solution that has proven to be reliable and operationally efficient at events of paramount importance, which require high security.

As part of the government programme to combat breaches in security, Mexico has already equipped its security forces with an impregnable voice/data radio communications system. Incorporating a national federal network and 30 regional networks based on TETRAPOL technology, all are fully interoperable between themselves, and with the federal network.

Further Information

In Europe, national multi-user TETRAPOL networks are being introduced in Spain, France, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Switzerland bringing together police forces, medical emergency services, fire services, civil security and other national organisations.

Some of the success stories at an international level that support this technology are: the G7 Summit in 1996, the Soccer World Cup in 1998, the visit of His Holiness John Paul II to Romania in May 1999 and the Summit of the International Monetary Fund in the Czech Republic. In Mexico, recent successes include The Monterrey Summit on Financing for Development, which was held in March 2002, the Puebla - Panama Plan in the city of Merida, as well as the recent visit of His Holiness John Paul II to Mexico.

At present, 64 networks are deployed or under construction in 30 countries worldwide, using technology based on the TETRAPOL standard, approved by the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) and the Police Co-operation Group (formerly the Schengen Group). Many of these networks cover entire nations: RUBIS (Gendarmerie Nationale) and ACROPOL (Police Nationale) in France, SIRDEE in Spain, PEGAS in the Czech Republic, SITNO in Slovakia, PHOENIX in Romania and IRIS in Mexico.

Presently, total TETRAPOL network coverage is over 1.4 million square kilometres - an area three times larger than France - serving some 420,000 users. Once the deployment operations now underway are complete, TETRAPOL will serve a million users with coverage of 4 million square kilometres. Investment in the networks so far amounts to € 3 billion.
