The Beauty is Breathtaking - The Honesty Is Raw -The Story Is Haunting
"Dancing on Black Ice" by Elvira Barnes is the very touching story of a black girl growing up in Minnesota. The innocent acceptance of things she didn't understand.....the painful acceptance of things she couldn't help but understand. Part of the story tells of her confinment to her room, then a home for unwed mothers, which she
describes as being 'incarserated and defenseless in a prison where the crime was motherhood'. Dancing on Black Ice is not a pretty story.....although there is beauty in it. Dancing on Black ice is not an easy book to read.....but
you won't be able to put it down. Dancing on Black Ice is a book everyone needs to read....no matter what color your skin.
Elvira Barnes (pronounced Elvera) is the daughter of southern Baptist parents who moved from the Mississippi cotton belt to a middle-class neighborhood in North Minneapolis after World War II. She is the youngest of 4 children and the only one born in Minnesota. Ms. Barnes is an activist for woman and has sought to make changes
in laws that disproportionately affect the African American community in negative ways. A graduate of the University of Minnesota, Ms. Barnes worked for more than a decade as a liaison to the governor's office, Assistant Director for the State Council on Black Minnesotans, was a foster parent for a number of years and headed
programs addressing the unmet needs of teen parents and residents dealing with chemical health issues. Although Dancing on Black Ice addresses negative aspects of her early life such as obesity, abuse, neglect and domestic
violence, Elvira would be the first to say that she is not a victim. Ms. Barnes believes that there is a reason for everything and that God allowed her path to follow its direction so that she could be a resource to those facing similar struggles.
Ms. Barnes is available for interviews by telephone and in person, and for book signings. Please contact her via email at ewycough@yahoo.com. You can also contact Marlene Robertson at 1-800-886-5059 or
