Nature Photographer's Stunning Images Recreate Impressionism
PUNTA GORDA, FL: Can the soul of an impressionist painter find happiness in the click of a camera shutter? Can film be used like a canvas to paint images with light?
Michael Impellizzeri offers a resounding yes. The results are revealed in a collection of remarkable photographs in his new book, Nature's Palette: Art Through a Photographer's Eyes -- a collection that Monet, Renoir and Cézanne might have wanted on their shelves. Many of the photos in this book "paint with light" just as the impressionists did-and many of them look more like paintings than photos.
Impellizzeri has a unique way of making nature images. He captures the animals and landscapes in motion. He simply does not take a picture; he makes images using the shutter as a paintbrush. His techniques include soft focus, double and multiple exposures, creative zoom, time lapse, slow shutter speeds, montage and camera shake to create a painterly look.
His photographs are striking, fluid and delicious with color such as the photo titled Beach Patrol", which captures the vibrant motion and geometry of seagulls flying in the air, or Autumn Magic", a Van Gogh-like scene which captures a rich gleaming landscape and turns it into an amazing fluid pageant of colorful delight. Another compelling image catches a giant s-shaped cloud illuminating a beach where water and sky merge and dwarf the two people walking on the shore at sunset.
Since retiring from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Impellizzeri has been dramatically expanding his photographic vision. His first collection, the NAIP Award-winning Impressions of the Natural World (1997), paired poetry with startlingly clear photographs of flora, fauna, and scenic-and mixed in a few of the impressionist-style photos that fill his latest collection. In 2000, he published Nature's Artistry, showing us the found sculpture of the natural world: a cloud shaped like an alligator, a gnarled tree branch that looks like a golden retriever.
Impellizzeri says, Film is simply a canvas on which I paint images with light. My camera and techniques are to a photograph what a car is to a trip; they get me there but
are not the reasons for my journey. The act of pushing a shutter can be elevated to an art."
Natures Palette is filled with 148 enchanting photographs bundled with marvelous narrative explanation, covering topics like: The Tapestry of 'Scapes, Artistry in Bloom, Fire as the Artist, Enchanting Water, Winged Odysseys and Rocks that Speak.
The book is distinguished by thoughtful and serene explanative text by Michael, who teaches his craft and conveys his tremendous love and respect for the natural world. He
discusses his experiences and views of the natural world and of the art of photography, including a frank discussion of his failures as well as his triumphs. His nature tales and breathtaking images provide food for thought as well as for the soul.
