Toronto, Ontario, November 5, 2002 -
Local comedian targets businesses looking to put some "fun" into their corporate functions...
Business meetings are about to get a lot less boring...
Russell Roy is a stand-up comedian, with an entertainment company that specializes in "practical joke" "hoax" or "put-on" speeches, designed to bring humor to business meetings, conventions, and corporate functions and parties. He is an imposter - a fake - a fraud...but companies love it, and will pay to hear him speak.
He is introduced as an incoming president, a Federal Government regulator, the Boss' long lost son, with trumped up credentials that any headhunter would envy. Once the audience is drawn in - then the fun begins. The first few minutes of the address are very serious, conventional and predictable - then he slowly slips in his "new agenda" - a ridiculous spoof of the future direction the company will take. The audience eventually "catches on" that the speech is a "hoax" - and then the comedy act begins.
Mr. Roy takes on the "office politics" of the organization and its employees - tells the "inside jokes" about high profile employees, gently "roasts" key executives - and generally pokes fun at the company, its people, their eccentricities, foibles, and accomplishments.
The satirical "awards ceremony" is a big favourite - you can't call the CEO, the Salesman of the Year, or the accountants at head office "penny pinching, misguided egomaniacs" - but Russell can, and in such a way that they will be flattered - it builds employee morale and facilitates communication. Hire him for your next event, and you just may find yourself called to the podium, as the recipient of a "Best Excuse for Missing the Friday Morning Sales Meeting" award.
"It's something different for a company gathering or a business/social function" Mr. Roy claims. "Not the same old after-dinner 'keep up the good work folks' motivational speech, but a custom written comedy monologue about your business, your competitors and your employees" - the surprise element is priceless". Mr. Roy truly enjoys pulling a well thought out good ruse on unsuspecting executives.
"Employees really appreciate the cleverness of the prank, and the amount of detail in the writing, not to mention its great to see the Boss taken down a few notches in front of their colleagues." explains Roy, "and the barriers in the organization break down, as it makes the "roasted" executives more approachable". "Everyone enjoys a good natured ribbing, and it gets people talking who may not, due to organizational structure, otherwise speak"
Russell has been a stand-up comedian since 1995, and has trained in Improvisation at The Second City. He holds a degree in Business and the Arts from York University.
