Wallace is lead singer and songwriter for the New York City-based band, who have a large and fervent fan base. Also known as HQ, Headquarters is at the forefront of the American Mod" movement, melding a particular lifestyle with specific music and fashion sensitivities. Headquarters music is influenced by classic British mod bands of the 1960s while adding an updated, contemporary edge of their own.
Directed by British writer/filmmaker Kolton Lee, American Mod" is a stylish, affectionate look at the New York subculture of Mods, highlighting a lifestyle that originated in England in the 1960s but is now alive and well in contemporary NYC. It captures a night out in the life of three friends on the hunt for a good time and introduces the viewer to the Mod scene with its scooters, distinctive fashions and catchy music. The film has been screened at festivals around the world, including in Los Angeles, London, Paris, Brussels, Genova, Berlin, and Toronto. American Mod" has been called: …no dry documentary…Using simple, positive narrative about the value of friendship, the film is a heavily stylized, music oriented short that connects with the genre and fizzes with surprise twists. From the first frame to the last, a visual treat…"
Headquarters wrote and recorded the original movie soundtrack, released on a five-song EP entitled Cakewalk, produced by Gordon Raphael, then a little-known engineer and musician who was eager to break into the production field. Wallace recorded most of the "American Mod" soundtrack himself, in Raphael's basement studio, during the summer of 2000. Its intentionally low-fi sound (Wallace insisted on only vintage guitars, drum sets, and microphones) was unquestionably an influence on the next album that Raphael produced: the Strokes' Is This It. Recently, Headquarters went back into the studio with Raphael to record a new three-song EP of original material, entitled Uptown Inside Out.
Upcoming airdates for American Mod" include Saturday November 9th - 4:15 AM, 6:30 AM, 2:00 PM; Tuesday, November 19th - 12:40 AM, 4:00 PM; Thursday, November 28 (Thanksgiving) - 12:10 PM; and Friday, November 29th - 5:35 AM.
