Kontron Introduces CP321 3U CompactPCI PowerPC CPU Featuring Motorola Kahlua II (MPC8245) Processor

San Diego, CA, November 2002 -- Kontron, one of the leading global embedded computer technology companies, has announced the release of the CP321, a low-power 3U CompactPCI processor board featuring the Motorola Kahlua II (MPC8245) PowerPC processor. The new board is ideal for mission-critical industrial or military applications that require high reliability and low power consumption in harsh environments.

The new CP321 features an integrated MPC8245 processor with an internal MPC603e core, operating at up to 330 MHz, packaged in a rugged 3U/4HP design. The new board can accommodate up to 256 MB of soldered SDRAM at 133 MHz, as well as 8 MB of soldered Flash memory for boot code and real time operating system (RTOS). Two 32-pin DIP sockets permit memory expansion using DiskOnChip, Flash chip, NV-SRAM, or SRAM.

The CP321 incorporates a 100-pin PCI expansion connector that can accommodate one or two expansion modules. In addition to a 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX autosensing Fast Ethernet channel, the new board provides two configurable serial ports (1 RS232, 1 RS232/RS485 optional opto-isolated) supporting up to 1.5 Mbps baud rates.

The low power consumption of the MPC8245 processor makes the CP321 ideal for harsh environments; an extended temperature version uses passive cooling to provide reliable operation from -40°C to 85°C (-40°F to 185°F). Compared with its successful predecessor, the CP320 (introduced in 2000), the CP321 draws 15% less current while providing 32% faster CPU performance and 33% faster memory performance.

The new CP321 features an OS-independent Universal Boot Loader, and provides support for processor visibility and control through a JTAG/COP interface.

The CP321 is available immediately in standard and extended temperature versions.
