BIRTHDAY HONOURS FOR WOMENS WEB SITE - Womens' Shopping Site beats Amazon to top title

Women's shopping information site TheSimpleSaver.com celebrated its first birthday this week by scooping a top web site award. The site, founded and still run by two working mothers, saw off such household names as Amazon, Loot, eBay and Interflora to land the 'Star Shopping Site award in the Winter 2002 ComputerActive Web Guide.

The site, founded and still run by two working mothers, saw off such household names as Amazon, Loot, eBay and Interflora to land the 'Star Shopping Site award in the Winter 2002 ComputerActive Web Guide.

"There were plenty of sites that merited five stars" says Lucy Nebel, from the Web Guide, "but TheSimpleSaver was just that bit better. Their site is a fantastic example of consumer power".

That's a view supported by many of the 35,000 women that use the site each month. "Our users - or Simple Savers - love a bargain. If they spot a great deal, they let us know about it and we put a link on the site" says co-founder Amanda Simple. "We are very careful about what we list and what we don't. If it's not a great offer or saving it just doesn't get on. We arent selling anything directly so we can afford to be impartial".

The site, which started as a series of emails between the founders, provides links to hundreds of savings, offers, discounts and bargains both on-line and on the high street. "We taught ourselves the basics of web site design and just went for it" says co-founder Amanda. "When I look back at the site from a year ago the design makes my toes curl, but that doesnt matter. Its the content thats important".

The sites users -- or Simple Savers -- agree. Comment such as "TheSimpleSaver is a great starting point whatever you need" and "The Simple Newsletter takes all the hard work out of finding a bargain" from happy Savers seem to prove Amandas point.
