Micro encapsulation, the 100,000 year solution to hazardous wastes.

MRI Materials announces its new Matrix line of environmental pollution products. Micro encapsulated materials are estimated to enjoy a life span of up to 100,000 years if not longer. Resistance to a changing environment is a critically important factor in the micro encapsulation of hazardous wastes. Unless your process can clearly show zero degradation and essentially an infinite life span then the best that can be said is it is a temporary solution. Unlike other solidification processes which produce a treated material that are essentially a solid, we offer a treated material whose particles of silica generally average less than 100 microns in diameter, hence the name micro encapsulation. These micro particles or silica cells, are smaller than soil particles. Thus Matrix is an excellent candidate for soils remediation.

It consists of a two-stage process in which hydrocarbons, contaminants and various heavy metals are Micro encapsulated in an inert silica matrix. During the mixing process two distinct reactions take place. The first is desorbtion of the hydrocarbons from any contaminates and the second is the emulsification of the hydrocarbons. The first step is to surround the organic contaminant with an aqueous, silica-surfacant system to form a michelle with the Matrix silica additive (3000 series). The surfactant orients itself with the hydrophobic portion toward the hydrocarbon and the hydrophilic portion toward the polar sites of the hydrophilic silica The second additive is a curing agent. Matrix 4000 curing additives are slightly acidic, aqueous, polymeric materials that react with the alkaline Matrix silica to speed up the micro encapsulation process. Within minutes micro encapsulation is observed to occur in the form of precipitated agglomerates of wet silica containing the contaminant species in the michelle trapped inside the silica matrix. The pH of the micro encapsulated material is neutral.

The hazardous material is converted into a substance with the characteristics and chemical properties of sand. The dangerous characteristics of the waste such as ignitibility, corrosivity, reactivity and toxicity are removed. The micro encapsulated material is resistant to water penetration, leaching and is believed to offer impressive long-term stability, because of the chemical nature of this reaction process, the matrix formed is permanent, broken only by temperatures exceeding 1800 degrees or by hydrofluoric acid, neither of which occurs naturally in the environment, promoting improved environmental health and safety.

We can treat hydrocarbons including PCB's, Gasoline, Crude Oils, Drilling Muds, Diesel Fuels, Tank Bottoms, Kerosene's, Waste Motor Oils, and Jet Fuels to name a few applications. If you want the maximum feasible pollution prevention product available on the market, Matrix offers quality and value for your environmental dollar.
