An auction was begun on Wednesday, November 13, 2002 on eBay (the popular online auction site) by a 25 year old man claiming to be willing to sell his love. The man claims to be forming a bond with the highest bidder by engaging in an act of exchange using the value system of the dollar. By sharing the experience of a sale and purchase, the man believes he and the winning bidder will be able to pursue the love of one another from a distance forever.
The auction is titled "my LOVE FOR SALE - all we need is love " and is auction number 1788051511. The auction was started with an opening minimum bid of $5.00. What the highest bidder physically will win and receive in the mail, after paying an additional $3.00 for shipping, is a picture of the seller and his unpublished direct contact information. The seller then requests that the bidder complete the exchange of love by returning to the address a picture of themselves and their contact information.
Is this real? Can you sell your love on eBay? In speaking with the seller, an art graduate student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, we have been told that the sale is a sort of experiment to gauge what value people place on love. The artist claims to have received an astonishing amount of email after only 24 hours of the 10 day auction from people both excited and disturbed by the simple action.
The auction is live until Nov-23-02 10:04:13 PST, so if you are looking for love - you may be able to just buy it online. Just in time for christmas.
