"Tree Tanglefoot" pest barrier is an ecologically-sound method of managing pesky ants.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -If you're looking for a safe way to manage ants by simply stopping them literally in their tracks, Tree Tanglefoot Pest Barrier is the perfect solution. Tree Tanglefoot Pest Barrier can protect your valuable trees and reduce the invading ant population.

Tree Tanglefoot Pest Barrier is made from natural tree resins, oils and vegetable waxes. Its a caramel-colored product that is viscous and very sticky. The product is usually applied to the tree trunk or vine bark surfaces with a flat wooden or plastic spatula, or a caulking tube cartridge. The use of a substrate or banding material, such as TangleGuard Tree Banding Material, or other waterproof material, is suggested for easy removal and to eliminate any possibility of tree damage. If there are gaps under the banding material, pack the hole with cotton matting or other material. This will prevent the ants from crawling under the sticky Tanglefoot band and up the tree.

Ants are usually attracted to the honey-dew residue" left by aphids living in various trees. As ants climb up over the sticky material, they become trapped without escape. The action is strictly mechanical. There are no pesticides or harmful chemicals are involved, and Tree Tanglefoot is not toxic to humans or animals.

According to a Tanglefoot spokesperson, Tree or vine trunk barriers are an ecologically sound practice, especially for the complex management of ants. It is also important to prune any low-hanging tree branches or cut down tall weeds under the trees, as any contact with the ground can provide a "highway" for ants to move into the trees, too."

Ants invade more than trees in the yard. There are different strategies you can employ using Tree Tanglefoot Pest Barrier® to stop the ants from gaining entry into bee hives, growing tables or plant stands, and other structures ants would climb as they forage for food. Using waterproof banding, apply a small amount of Tree Tanglefoot around a path ants would use to gain access to food. Avoid placing where contact with small children or pets is possible. Tree Tanglefoot is non-toxic, but it is very sticky.

Tree Tanglefoot is ideal for both home and professional use, and comes in many sizes, from 6-ounce tubes to 25-pound pails. For banding a small number of trees against ants or other crawling insects, Tanglefoots Tangle Guard Tree Care Kit contains everything required to successfully protect several small-diameter trees.
