NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Burrito Deluxe, a band that features legends Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Garth Hudson, Tommy Spurlock and Carlton Moody alongside newcomer Willie Watson, will release their debut album titled Georgia Peach (Lamon Records, distributed by Redeye Distribution) on February 25, 2003. Among the albums special guests are Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, former Flying Burrito Brother Gig Guilbeau and Barry Bales of Alison Krauss & Union Station.
Georgia Peach derives its name from another GP -- the late, legendary Gram Parsons, nicknamed the "Georgia Peach" -- with whom Sneaky Pete played in the Flying Burrito Brothers. Spurlock frequently accompanied the band on their L.A. dates. Burrito Deluxe culled its band name from the title of the Flying Burrito Brothers second album.
The bands tri-generational makeup illustrates the depth of Gram Parsons influences on contemporary music of the past three decades.
The band was organized by Tommy Spurlock, regarded my some as the last of the "operators" in the tradition of Sam Phillips, Norm Petty or Brian Ahern. A native Texan transplanted to Los Angeles in the '70s, Spurlock became acquainted with Flying Burrito Brothers pedal steel guitar legend Sneaky Pete Kleinow. He also befriended members of The Band including Garth Hudson and the late Rick Danko. So in a sense the seeds of Georgia Peach were sewn in the '70s in L.A.
Spurlock played steel with Highway 101, garnering a slew of #1 hits, CMA and ACM Awards, and several Grammy nominations. He moved to Nashville in 89 to play with Rodney Crowell and recorded with Suzy Boggus, John Michael Montgomery and David Ball. He also worked with friends Garth Hudson and Rick Danko, playing on The Bands 1993 release Jericho. After working with noted producer Brian Ahern, Spurlock made his debut as a producer working with Dave Olney; the album High, Wide, and Lonesome topped the Americana Charts and received Pulse! Magazine's "Best Folk Album of the Year" award for 1995. More recently, Spurlock has produced Chip Taylors Seven Days in May (1999) and played on recent albums by Jim Lauderdale, Delbert McClinton and Garth Hudson. Spurlock inhabits a grand American world in his music -- the Texas town, the Nashville street, the California desert .
In 2002 Spurlock assembled Burrito Deluxe to pay tribute to his mentor Sneaky Pete Kleinow, bringing him back into the recording studio after a decades absence. Sneaky Pete had spent the post-Burrito years in roles varied from accompanist to Joni Mitchell and John Lennon to a stint as chief animator in the "Gumby" television series.
Spurlock also enlisted Garth Hudson, plus Carlton Moody who had received a Grammy nomination for his work with his family band the Moody Brothers. Young North Carolina native Willie Watson rounded out the fold. The member of the Old Crow Medicine Show band, featured in a segment of PBS American Roots Music documentary series, came to Spurlocks attention through his Nashville performances and his dead-on interpretation of Gram Parsons classic vocals.
Spurlock also enlisted the estimable Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, former Flying Burrito Brothers fiddler Gib Guilbeau, and also the Soggy Bottom Boys (a.k.a. Allison Krauss Union Station, voices behind O Brothers "Man Of Constant Sorrow") to complement the core band on Georgia Peach.
Georgia Peach can actually charm the contemporary country music ear while taking us back to a better time. It contains a grit and wisdom that is rare in today's country music. With Sneaky Pete Kleinow (soon to be pushing 70) on steel, Willie Watson (age 22) on vocals, plus veterans Moody and Spurlock, Burrito Deluxe helps country music return to its essence with Georgia Peach.
The band will tour in 2003.
