JONES INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY AND MONSTER ANNOUNCE
WINNERS OF "EXTREME LEARNING CHALLENGE"
Jones International University announced two winners of its "Extreme Learning Challenge," a contest for people with extreme lives to vie for a full college scholarship.
DENVER, Colo. -- Jones International University®, Ltd. (JIU) and Monster®, the leading global online careers site and flagship brand of TMP Worldwide Inc., have announced the much-anticipated winners of the "Extreme Learning Challenge," a competition for scholarships to JIU, the first fully online, accredited university. The contest was designed for people whose extreme lifestyles make it difficult to attend traditional institutions. Entrants submitted their extreme learning stories in 500 words or less via the official contest Web site in August and September of 2002.
Dr. Pamela S. Pease, president of JIU, worked with an internal review board who selected the most compelling of the entries and today awarded the scholarships to Charles Armatys, a high-altitude mountain guide, and Sandra Jackson, co-founder of a non-profit health awareness organization, and survivor of three bouts with cancer. The scholarships are valued at $18,000 each and can be applied toward any one of the 28 degree programs JIU offers.
"We were impressed by the number and quality of entries from individuals detailing the extreme nature of their everyday lives," said Dr. Pease. "Our entrants ran the gamut, from firefighters and a Tibetan River Guide to stay-at-home parents and entrepreneurs. The entrants varied so widely, in fact, that we commissioned RoperASW to conduct a nationwide survey to determine public perception of an 'extreme life."

Survey findings indicated 31 percent of all respondents consider an extreme life to mean, "I cant get all I want done in a day," while 30 percent equate an extreme life with adventure. Sixty percent of respondents consider their lives "somewhat" or "very" extreme; 56 percent indicated the Internet makes their lives easier; and 57 percent said they would be "very" or "somewhat" likely to fit online education into their extreme lives.
The JIU review board selected Armatys, 51, based on his work as a contract mountain guide throughout the world. Over the course of 24 years, the Black Forest, Colo., resident has climbed mountains on six continents and continues to enjoy leading expeditions that present him with extreme challenges. One challenge he cannot manage to fit into his lifestyle, however, is working toward a graduate degree at a traditional university. At JIU, he intends to pursue an MBA in International Business.
Jackson was diagnosed with cancer three times in the 1990s, twice with breast cancer and once with lung cancer. She has been cancer free since 1997 and is co-founder of Courage Unlimited, a Las Vegas-based non-profit health awareness organization that strives to provide "the best information, guidance and hope to those diagnosed with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses." Jackson, 53, also hosts a live radio program and is looking forward to pursuing her bachelors degree, something that she would not be able to do without the flexibility and convenience of working online from home.
Overwhelmed by the response and extreme stories submitted, JIU Chancellor Glenn R. Jones decided to award each "Extreme Learning" contestant one JIU course-normally $925-free of charge. "The enthusiasm and desire to learn expressed in the entrants submissions was astounding," said Jones. "Providing each of them with access to a course of their choice enables us to thank them for sharing their fascinating stories and allows them to experience the convenience and quality of study at Jones International University. Online learning at JIU is an ideal solution for individuals seeking to meet personal goals while balancing extreme lives."
