Come See The World's Most Popular Baby
An exhibition of Nativity scenes from around the world
As one of the worlds most popular religious and world leaders of all time the birth of Jesus is often referred to as the Nativity.
The story of the Nativity comes to us from the Gospels of Matthew and
Luke. Lukes account describes the journey of Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem, where they must go to be counted in a census ordered by Caesar Augustus. Unable to find a room in an inn, they take refuge in a stable used to shelter animals. Here Jesus is born and laid in a manger filled with hay.
The origins of the Nativity scene date back to 4th century A.D, when artists were portraying this birth scene of Christ. Saint Francis of Assisi is credited with popularizing the nativity as a focal point of the Christmas celebration.
As Christianity spread throughout the world many cultures adapted the Crèche as it is also called, into a likeness of their own people. Nowadays you can find Nativity scenes with images of African-American, Mexican, Native-American, Asian and a multitude of other cultures.
On Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1 from 1-7 pm an exhibition of 150 Nativity Scenes from around the world can be seen at Saint John Vianneys Main Hall at 4601 Hyland Avenue in the East San Jose Foothills. Price is $2 for Adults and $1 for Children 12 & under.
Funds raised will benefit Rainbows a non-profit support group for children who are experiencing death, divorce or separation from a loved one. http://www.rainbows.org For more information about The Nativity Art Show contact Lily Tenes at 408-272-1861 or lily@maniacidea.com.
