The system used to convert numbers to letters is based on phonetics. Assign each of the digits 0 through 9 to a consonant and insert some vowels until you get a word. For example, suppose that you want to remember that the atomic weight of Gold is 79. Suppose also that 7 is represented by C and 9 is represented by B. Then we could insert the vowel A to get the word CAB. The last step is to make a crazy or vivid association between the word CAB and GOLD. Imagine a solid gold, sparkling cab driving down the street with a gold-toothed cab driver. Converting numbers to words is fairly easy when the numbers are small, but the process becomes more difficult for larger numbers.
