TheGooey Goes Global
New Zealand Internet provider Ihug and Software developer Wired Icon have recently launched a web portal and virtual storage system called theGooey. http://www.thegooey.com
TheGooey is believed to ba a world first to combine instant messaging, SMS (text) and voice messaging, web-based email, calendar reminders, automated file uploads and downloads, hot link favourites, customised news feeds, and virtual file storage.
Features of theGooey include:
Access your files anywhere
Share files with your friends
Chat with your friends
Send text to sms, text to speech and text to fax messages
Make aptmt's and reminders
Schedule file downloads and uploads with the Gooey file scheduler
Store your files and emails on the gooey server Listen to your favourite radio stations
Surf the net
Customise your gooey homepage with news and weather feeds
The file storage delivers up to 1GB of personal file space available from anywhere via your web browser.
These files can also be shared with other theGooey users by dragging and dropping to a shared file folder -- allowing mobile office workers and friends and family access to collaborate and share information.
Grant Wattie from Wired Icon said over 6 staff had been involved in the development, and Ihug had provided has provided finance and development staff. Since we have launched we have got an incredible response from users, obviously its something the internet community is looking for Grant said.
The service was being offered to internet users internationally. We aim to provide the service to ISPs to resell to their customers. TheGooey has the facility to bill services to the users ISP account for participating ISPs.
TheGooey is free to join with users getting an initial 2MB of disk space.
Extra charges are levied for some services such as text to SMS or voice messaging and additional file storage space above the initial 2MB provided free.
The developers believe there is a gap in the market for a single product that provides the full range of internet functionality and services making the internet easier to use and more friendly.
"One of the key benefits of theGooey is you have all the online functionality previously available in a number of disparate web-sites all in one online location.
"While there are other features out there that exist online, such as newsfeeds, SMS or file-sharing services, there is no one location where everything is on one central site."
The initial feature set would be expanded regularly and more customisation would be added.
Version two of theGooey may include features like mail filters and personal photo albums online.
"The whole idea is customisation of the features that are related to you."
