FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Macomb Township, MI (11/18/2002) - With the holidays quickly approaching and many parents finding themselves on a tighter budget than usual, RaisingOurKids.com has decided to bring a collection of informative articles on saving money during the holidays, homemade gift ideas, and tips for family gift giving. "I wanted to let people know that just because finances are tight, doesn't mean they can't give their children a memorable holiday," said site owner Valerie Zilinsky. Zilinsky has been helping parents help each other since the birth of her first website in 2000, RaisingaDaughter.com. She later added RaisingaSon.com and most recently, RaisingOurKids.com, which is a doorway to both communities.
"Money doesn't grow on trees," said Zilinsky. "I know that as well as any other parent. The holidays are tough enough when the economy is booming, but with things as unpredictable as they have been this year, many families are having to buckle down and tighten an already small holiday budget." Here are some of her tips for saving money this holiday season:
| | - Make gifts. Homemade gifts can be better than store-bought ones if you put a little TLC into it. Don't think just because you aren't a creative person you can't make a nice gift. We have many articles that will tell you what to do step by step to make gifts like jar cookies and salt dough ornaments. What's great is that many of these not only save you money, but are great gifts for kids to help out with to increase family bonding time.
| | - Join wrapping paper and cookie swaps. This way you have access to a wide variety of wrapping paper without buying rolls and rolls of it. It's the same with cookies - save yourself time and money by making one type of cookie, and trading with other people you know. You can then combine the cookies for gifts, or for your own personal use.
| | - Relive memories. Buy a cheap journal and fill it with snap shots and short stories about the person it's being given to. Add a couple of your favorite poems and quotes that apply to your friendship. The person you give it too will love reliving the past, and you'll be surprised how many things you remember that they had forgotten until you wrote it down.
| | - To solve the problem of gift giving to a large extended family, try suggesting this year for the entire family to adopt a needy family. If you have a smaller family or group of friends, you can do the same thing with "adopting" a needy child. Not only does this teach children and remind adults how fortunate they are, it also allows you to give only one present instead of buying one for every family member or friend you know. And your single present combined with the rest of the group will make a huge difference to someone who is in need.
The website is also offering free holiday-themed coloring pages to help keep the little ones busy while you are putting the sites many ideas into use. "Just click, save, and print," said Zilinsky. No more fighting over wanting to color the same pictures, and you're saving money too!" You also might be able to fill your own stocking up by entering the Stuff Your Stocking" contest each day.
