The Holy BLOOD
A debut novel by Charles Covington
A smart, sexy, feisty European religious history lecturer finds herself caught up in a roller coaster of a ride with the American academic system where the boundaries between education and commercialism are no longer recognised. The theft of the Christian relic - the Holy Blood of Bruges, allows an Oklahoma University, where Jena teaches, to conduct authenticity testing and leads to the ultimate "what if".
Cloning the DNA structure of the Holy Blood is the logical next step, isn't it?
When ivory tower fascism premises scientific truth at all costs a few powerful toes get trodden on and when the Mafia of the religious world are threatened they bite back. There is no mercy and Jena is centre stage where the audience is the heavy mob of the Vatican, Islamic fundamentalists and Zionists.
God doesn't play dice but is he playing chess? Is this the definitive irony where we, the pawns in the predetermined endgame, create the Second Coming?
Playing God is not a game, it's reality.

Charles Covington is an American living in Belgium and has written The Holy BLOOD, an historical novel/thriller, about the relic of the Holy Blood in Bruges, Belgium.
This icon of the Holy Blood was brought back to the city of Bruges, which was the most important shipping and royal city of 15th century Europe, as a reward to the Count of Flanders for his service during the 2nd crusade. After establishing the history of the relic in the time of Mary of Burgundy, the book moves to the present. While on vacation, a genetics professor at a Midwestern US University steals the relic, more by serendipity rather than by design. He hurries back to the US and uses the sacred blood within the vial in an attempt to clone the Second Coming. Interests of the Catholic Church, a fundamentalist Islamic faction and the activist president of the university learn of the cloning and intervene to control its fate and that of the mother who carries it. The final chapter reveals a secret about the relic concealed for five hundred years.
Charles has conducted extensive research into the history related to this story including repeated visits to Bruges and to the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Research and conversations with cell biologists and theologians inform the scientific and religious parts of the story and the plot reveals current debates and/or breakthroughs in genetics, ethics, religion, high technology and education while developing suspenseful action. Charles was an architectural consultant in the Washington, DC area for 20 years before moving to Europe and taking up his new career as a stay-at-home dad to his son of ten.
