magic4 Instant Messaging client surpasses rigorous testing at OMA IMPS event
magic4's Instant Messaging client, an integral part of its mobile messaging platform, has passed all seven server tests at the 2002 Village Fest #2 in Atlanta, Georgia.
UK, 26 November, 2002 - magic4's Instant Messaging client, an integral part of its mobile messaging platform, has passed all seven server tests at the 2002 Village Fest #2 in Atlanta, Georgia. magic4's IM solution, one of the few products to pass all tests, is now fully compliant with the Open Mobile Alliance Instant Messaging Presence Server (OMA IMPS) 1.1 standard, which has been developed to achieve interoperability between key products.
Simon Wilkinson, CEO of magic4 says: "Instant Messaging responds perfectly to the needs of mobile phone users who can now form 'chat' communities and be aware of each others availability. IM is extremely popular as a desktop service so the move to mobile is a logical step. To date, the only barrier to widespread adoption has been the question of interoperability, which is key to the success of the mobile services market."
Simon Wilkinson continues: "magic4 is committed to building open, global standards and working with OMA IMPS allows us to realise this goal. magic4's dedication to these initiatives reflects our commitment and desire to provide consumers and business users worldwide with solutions that work across carriers and across mobile devices."
The testing was focused on login/logout, adding and deleting names from contact lists, confirming presence is indicated properly, sending and receiving messages and group related functions. In addition to the memory functionality, many optional functions were tested, including support for 4-way login transaction, support of Presence Service Element functionality, update presence transaction and manage contact list transaction.
As of October this year, Wireless Village was integrated into OMA forming the OMA IMPS working group.

About the Wireless Village initiative
Founded by Ericsson, Motorola, and Nokia, Wireless Village, the mobile Instant Messaging and Presence Services (IMPS) initiative, was formed in April 2001 to define and promote a set of universal specifications for mobile instant messaging and presence services. The specifications will be used for exchanging messages and presence information between mobile devices, mobile services and Internet-based instant messaging services, all interoperable and leveraging existing internet technologies. Through its Supporters, the Wireless Village initiative is building a vibrant community of users, mobile operators and global business partners where internet and wireless domains converge. The IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization (IEEE-ISTO) provides day-to-day administrative support to the Wireless Village initiative. New members have the opportunity to comment and make contributions to the specification, participate in interoperability events and attend quarterly face-to-face board meetings.
