The Glimpse Foundation Presents "In Living Color!"
Pawtucket, Rhode Island - 11/22/02 - Is Homer Simpson a symbol of the United States? Can you distinguish Shakira from Britney Spears? How do other countries form impressions of the United States: through our military or our movies? On Tuesday, December 3 at 7:00 PM, The Glimpse Foundation, an emerging Pawtucket-based nonprofit, will be presenting its second statewide conference, In Living Color: American Popular Culture Abroad." The conference, which will take place at Brown University in Salomon 001, will critically examine the American image" in light of both the influences of U.S. popular culture abroad as well as recent U.S. foreign policy. It is free and open to the public.
The conference will present an opportunity for local media to acquaint themselves with The Glimpse Foundation and one of its four central components, the Glimpse Conference Series. Our semiannual conferences are intended to provide participants with a variety of perspectives on the issues at stake; to forge an enduring community of culturally, politically, and socially conscious Rhode Islanders; and to raise awareness about The Glimpse Foundation in Rhode Island. The conferences consist of moderated discussions between carefully-selected panelists, followed by a question-and-answer period and an informal reception. The first conference took place in April 2002 and was entitled, Behind the News: New Perspectives on the Future of International Journalism." It featured representatives from the BBC, AP, PBS, and Harpers Magazine and attracted over 200 audience members.
The panel for our upcoming fall conference will feature Dr. Susan Morey, Senior Fulbright Specialist; Dr. Jim von Schilling, Area Chair of the American Culture Association for Journalism and Media Culture; and Paul Buhle, Lecturer at Brown University in History and American Civilization. The audience will consist of 200-300 students, educators, community organizers, media representatives and concerned citizens.

The Glimpse Foundation, officially incorporated in November 2001, was started by Brown University students and is currently run by recent Brown University graduates. Through its magazine, web site, conference series, and developing study abroad fellowship program, The Glimpse Foundation strives to foster progressive and intimate global understandings by deepening our regard for the people, places and events of the world. The Foundation uses its growing international membership community to innovate platforms for creative nonfiction, informed discourse and intercultural exchange.
During their time at Brown University and in the six months since their graduation, Glimpse staff members have established an international readership for their online and print publication, Glimpse Magazine. Their web site and online magazine attracts an average of 21,000 hits per week. The Foundation distributed 2,500 copies of the first print issue of Glimpse Magazine in April 2002. Promos for our second print issue, scheduled for release in January, will be distributed at our upcoming conference. The Foundation has received significant financial support from The National Geographic Society and the local Chace Foundation. It has forged partnerships with the Peace Corps, AmeriSpan, SIT and over 800 collegiate international programs offices.
The Glimpse Foundation is also partnering with Rhode Island College and Community College of Rhode Island to develop a study abroad fellowship program for RIC and CCRI students. The program, projected to begin in the spring of 2004, will offer low-income students financial support to study abroad and write for Glimpse Magazine. In the spring of 2003, The Glimpse Foundation also plans to expand its web site into a comprehensive resource/service center for the study abroad/international volunteer community.
