The need for true parental controls for use of the Internet has never been greater" says Kenneth Grisham, President / CEO of Premier Assistive Technology. Industry experts have continued to tell us that while some filtering controls exist, they are still easily bypassed and unsuitable for anyone who needs absolute certainty regarding authorized Internet access. We looked at the current technologies available to parents through existing browsers and Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Controls provided by ISPs are only valid if you use that service. Voluntary rating services are of some value in establishing guidelines of acceptable content, but the problem is just that, they are 'voluntary. Steven Timmer, Chairman, Founder and Chief Scientist for Premier Assistive Technology explains that The security model being employed by all other browsers / software tools is based on 'filtering algorithms. Filters, by their very nature, are structured to block some material while letting other material pass through. Filtering search algorithms look through site content for objectionable words, phrases, etc., attempting to identify sites based on that criteria. The problem with Internet filters is that while criteria may be objective, there are many ways for website designers to skirt around those criteria. Additionally, there are easily known methods (that are published on the Internet) for disabling parental controls. It is virtually impossible to achieve a 100% accurate filter that yields only good content and blocks all objectionable content."

Mr. Timmer adds that With CURFEW, we took an entirely different approach. We looked at the problem and completely threw out the notion of filtering".
