TIME TRAVEL GETS A NEW TWIST!
WRITERS CLUB PRESS RELEASES SHE GOT BACK
BY JENIFER MITCHELL-ROBINSON
Hampton, VA-Iuniverse Inc. has announced the publication of the novel, She Got Back. What is Black on Black prejudice? Black on Black prejudice is the bigotry, harassment, and anguish that are inflicted on Blacks by other Blacks because of skin complexion differences. It was inflicted on the slaves by slaveholders, and passed down from generation to generation by African-Americans, who held on to this ignorance. It is the subject of the new young adult novel by author, Jenifer Mitchell -- Robinson.
She Got Back is about Samantha Riley, a modern High School student, who travels to a plantation in the 18th century town of Cantabee, and comes face to face with America's Civil War. Samantha Riley is an honor roll student, who is destined to graduate in 2002. Miss. Riley has good looks, popularity, and wealthy parents, whove given her everything. As does Samanthas mother, Samantha tends to snub other African-Americans, who have skin complexions that are much darker than hers. She harasses her African-American peers, who have dark skin complexions. She refuses to let them into her circle of friends. She is dead set against letting anyone, including her friend, Shawnique Swenson, try to convince her to change her way of thinking.
Miss. Riley takes a highly unexpected trip back in time to witness the beginning of Black on Black prejudice in America. She learns first hand what it was like to be a slave in 1861. With her modern-day styles, and hip-hop language, she clashes with the people and culture of that time. She finds herself in the home of a young slaveholder, Mr. Waterford, who finds her both troublesome and intriguing. He does many things to try to win her affection, including retrieving her fantastic traveling machine", her 2002 sports car, from the public. Of course, Samantha prefers her freedom. She meets slaves, who in a round about way, help enlighten her to the truth about Black on Black prejudice.
Abruptly, Samantha learns that her light colored skin doesnt make her better than African-Americans with darker complexions. She realizes that in spite of the fact that she has never actually been a slave, she has been a fool for the prejudiced slave masters of old. She changes her way of thinking for the better. She returns to the year 2002 to graduate with honors as planned, and goes on to college to graduate with honors. The story continues, as Samantha, who is now a top supervisor at a modeling agency, takes a stand against Black on Black prejudice. It ends at a summit of success in her life, whereupon she thanks the power that gave her the life changing, time travel experience. It combines slavery and Civil War observation, with modern day, young adult situations, and incidences of peer pressure, with the knowledge of the origination of Black on Black prejudice.
