Jersey Telecom is positioning itself as an offshore mass SMS delivery hub with an order announced today for revolutionary SMS routing technology from Telsis.
Under the contract, Telsis is providing two SMS Routers, together with bespoke software and on-going support. The technology will enable Jersey Telecom to handle very large volumes of SMS traffic. With mobile and fixed network customer levels on the island approaching saturation, the telco aims to build a substantial new additional revenue stream from high-volume SMS ahead of possible privatisation.
Fully-redundant and carrier-grade with a remarkably small footprint, the SMS Router is a high-speed intelligent switch with SS7, MAP and TCP/IP interfaces. It will sit within existing network infrastructure and intelligently route all mobile-related signalling messages passing across Jersey Telecom's international interconnect. Messages to and from third party equipment will be handled directly, avoiding any overload to the core network and protecting quality of service for Jersey Telecom customers.
"It will enable us to handle very large volumes of SMS traffic from and to value-added service providers without impacting either voice or traditional person-to-person messaging on our island network," says Jerry Rabasté, director of planning at Jersey Telecom. "Initially, it will route up to 400 messages a second, but can easily be upgraded to route thousands a second."
The move pitches Jersey Telecom into competition with a number of other mobile operators that are also re-shaping their networks to handle high-volume SMS. But Rabasté says the Channel Island operator is crafting a unique offering.
"We're going to be highly cost-effective, very focused and flexible. Our choice of routing technology will also give us an edge. The Telsis SMS Router is an extremely robust platform from a long-established vendor that does all its own signalling development and does whatever it takes to give us what we need. That means we will be highly reliable, but in turn extraordinarily responsive to the needs of our users."
First customer for the Jersey Telecom service is virtual SMS operator mBlox. It will be able to take advantage of the huge increase in throughput to further open up the UK and international market for services such as interactive TV and direct response SMS.
With its headquarters, research and production site in the UK, Telsis (www.telsis.com) has sales and support operations in France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain, Singapore and Australia. The company offers a range of carrier-grade infrastructure platforms, including intelligent SMS Routers, IN service control points, switches and advanced IVR solutions that support a wide variety of innovative value-added voice and text services. Telsis products are in use with major network operators around the world.
