Boston - December 2002 -- Harbor Research, Inc., announces the launch of the November issue of Pervasive Internet Report (PIR), highlighting the growth of the smart" device market and the massive opportunities for connectivity providers as more devices become networked. This months PIR also includes full profiles of Connect One, Embrace Networks, HomeRelay and Prosyst -- companies that are shaping the Pervasive Internet.

In this issue of PIR, Harbor shows that over 50% of embedded engineers recognize connectivity as being very important" or vital" for the devices of the future. Of the 150+ companies surveyed for the November PIR, 60% have already made investments to enable and network their devices. And that is only one of many revealing survey results included in the November issue, all of which clearly show that were well on our way to a future of ubiquitous machine-to-machine and machine-to-human interaction.

Weve been tracking the Pervasive Internet for over three years. Just recently we've noticed an unmistakable groundswell in activity," says Glen Allmendinger, President of Harbor Research. Everywhere you look there are large electronics and embedded systems companies exploring ways to make machines smarter and more able to communicate. The technologies are there and prices are falling. The only question remaining is who will really kick things off, device manufacturers or connectivity providers. We call this the 'Chicken or Egg Dilemma'. The next few months will be very telling."

About the Pervasive Internet
The term Pervasive Internet" signifies the phenomenon of electronic devices with both embedded intelligence and global networkability via the Internet, allowing for a quantum leap in systems feedback, self-awareness, and optimization.

A recent Harbor Research study indicates that by 2010, the non-PC intelligent device market will soar past $250 billion with over 500 million intelligent devices networked annually for online services and remote monitoring. According to Harbor President, Glen Allmendinger, Over the next several years Pervasive Internet adoption will revolutionize the way companies do business. We found that over 60% of device OEMs plan to have Internet-enabled capabilities by 2003. This will create a huge shift in product design and consumer expectations. People will interact with devices in a completely different manner and look for a whole new degree of depth and personalization of services."
