A collection of short stories, poems, and memoirs drawn from the author's early life in the southwestern Virginia mountains in the 1940s and later.

(It carries enthusiastic cover endorsements from novelist Lee Smith and Parks Lanier of Radford University.)

In poems and stories "stubborn and beautiful as wildflowers," Jeanne Shannon artfully mines the culture of her native region, the Appalachian Couth. She weaves tragedy through the mundane to great effect, for murder, death and migration often haunt the serene landscapes of leafy roadsides and mountain creek banks. The book is wonderfully quiet--hushed, yet tense with the inner conflict of an adolescent southern girl coming to terms with her burgeoning sexuality, her yearning for the spiritual, and her wish to experience a wider world outside the mountains.

Novelist Lee Smith says about this book: "I read Stars Scattered Like Seeds in one great gulp--now I've started right back at the beginning again. Jeanne Shannon has an astonishing ability to capture the exact feeling of time gone by. Her gift for precise imagery has given me back huge chunks of my earlier life. I love this book, especially "A Letter to Darlene." What a wonderful writer she is!"
