West Haven Police Department Unveils New Technology
at Rotary Club Meeting
Detective Paul Raucci of the West Haven Police Department explains the latest technology in law enforcement, the Computer Voice Stress Analyzer.
WEST HAVEN, CT, December 5, 2002 -- There were no lies told, not even white ones, at this weeks meeting of the Rotary Club of West Haven. If there had been, Detective Paul Raucci of the West Haven Police Department would have revealed them!
Detective Raucci, serving as guest speaker for the week, captivated about 30 Rotarians by showing them the newest in police technology: the Computer Voice Stress Analyzer. The CVSA, which is essentially a laptop with a sensitive microphone, analyzes levels of stress in an individuals voice to determine whether or not that individual is telling the truth. According to Raucci, the tool has already proven itself extremely reliable and very helpful, both for building a case against guilty parties as well as exonerating those who are innocent. In his talk, Detective Raucci stressed that the CVSA can only be used with the consent of the person to be interrogated, and that results can only be admitted as evidence in court with the consent of the defendant.
The West Haven Police Department is the only department in the state currently using this technology; in all, three West Haven detectives have received certification to operate the equipment.
