Asia Strategy Group's Asia Supermarket Report has just been released in Dec 2002, says its CEO, Lawrence Yeo. The report, from an Asia Industry Report series of 12 other industries like department stores, retail fashion, gambling, restaurants, fast food, etc..., includes a regional and country industry overview, market size (annual sales in US$ millions), market growth rates (2001, 2002, 2003), historical CAGR or compounded annual growth rate for 1998 to 2001, YOY or year-on-year growth rate from 2003 to 2005, regulatory environment analysis, competive analysis, future trends, industry attractiveness ratings, listing of primary and secondary sources and regional summary. Geographical areas covered in report include Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.

In 2001, India had the biggest supermarket sales followed by Japan and Australia. This will be the pattern for 2001 till 2003. Together, these 3 countries' supermarket sales constitute 85% of Asia's 13 largest supermarket markets. Historical CAGR for the Asia region averaged 15.2% (India and Indonesia both at 12%), with minimum at 0.5% (Japan) and maximum at 53% (China). Philippines scored second highest at 40%.

Projected YOY growth from 2002 to 2005 for the Asia region is expected to average 14.6% (India at 13%), with minimum at -- 2.5% (Taiwan) and maximum at 55% (China). Second highest would be Philippines and South Korea (both at 27.5%). As for Industry Attractiveness Ratings, the Regional Average is 5.1 (New Zealand), with least attractive country being Taiwan (3.3) and most attractive country being Malaysia (6.1).
